Tom’s Music Picks – Civilization

Posted by in Music Comment on this

Todays music pick has formed the backbone of an advertising campaign by sports giant Adidas, but in its own right is a brilliant return to the limelight for French electronic duo, Justice.  Civilization is available for download from April 4th.  Enjoy.

End of an era… or a decade more precisely…

Posted by in Ramblings Comment on this

So at the time of writing i’m 28 hours away from leaving my second decade on this planet and turning 21…

Doesn’t seem too big a deal, not arranged much, decided to tag along to a Storm FM Social for my birthday outing being just the day before, superheroes fancy dress as it happens (more on that another time).

Will probably end up drinking more than is advisable, my brother and a couple of friends up to visit me, and then home to see my family on Friday/Saturday. Perhaps arrange something over the Easter break for all of my friends away at other universities.

Picked up a great bunch of friends over the last few years, and even a new hobby or two (the most prominent being airsofting, which we’re off to do next Saturday :) )

Aims for the foreseeable future;

  • Pass my degree
  • Start job hunting, or look into a masters.

Which is kind of how i came onto this article, about how to answer common HR questions in the best way possible and avoiding falling into certain traps. Hope some of you find this useful!

Returning to your television screens this Easter…

Here we go again…

The hype machine for the BBC Radio 1 Big Weekend is starting to wind up again.  Last year saw Europe’s largest free music festival come to an unusually sunny Bangor in North Wales.  Tomorrow (Wednesday) morning Scott Mills will announce this year’s venue, and I find myself feeling a mix of nostalgia (Big Weekend 2010 I don’t think will ever be topped for me), and jealousy at the lucky lot who will get it this year.

Anyway, tune in to Scott Mills at 6:30am (if you’re awake) for the news.  You can also watch and listen to highlights from last years event, or find out more on the BBC Radio 1 website.

Tom’s Music Picks – Side By Side

Posted by in Music Comment on this

Today’s music pick is Side by Side, the latest single from alternative rock band Feeder.  I used to have a real soft spot for their music, and it’s great to see Feeder heading back to what they do best, with an eighth studio album in the works promising to be a return to the brilliance of Yesterday Went Too Soon and Comfort In Sound.

Side by Side was released for download today, with all profits going to the Red Cross in aid of the Japanese Tsunami relief effort.  Head on over to Feederweb or your preferred music store to get your copy.

Happy Crysis2 day!

Ash’s Music Picks – Psychosocial Baby

Posted by in Music Comment on this

Been a busy month… as you may be able to tell from the lack of posting, was going to review a film i was off to see (Battle LA) but that trip has been postponed by a week.  So instead i bring you something i came across on the internet, and albeit worrying, its collated incredibly.  Well produced all round I think.

Mashups…God how I love them. Getting two separate tracks and sticking them together can go either one of two ways :
1) Like a tuna and jam sandwich, or
2) Like cheese and chips

(Judging by the food references I must be hungry)

After watching Ash’s music pick : Muse 8bit, I began clicking link after link on the side before finding this little piece which I think goes together like not only cheese and chips, but with a side order of onion rings :D

So as go forth into this world hunting for food, I leave you with this:

Whatcha think?

To Scared for Horror

Posted by in Ramblings Comment on this

So recently i have taken a job in a DVD rental store, the perks are great but I am constantly being asked to recommend films from a genre I can not answer. Horror.

When people ask me for a horror film I have to rack my brains to think of a good scary film, there are a lot of so called ‘horrors’ being released but nothing that scares, they just seem to be filled with gore and more gore.

Gone are the days when the simple sight of a silhouetted figure walking down the street in a rain mac could cause goose bumps, or when the image of twin children on the silver screen could make grown adults sleep with the lights on.

Now we have films filled with pain and torture, arms being ripped from there sockets and eyes being pierced being considered the scariest things ever.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a masochist and I definitely do not want to get into a situation like these characters, but I want the return of the good old fashioned horror .

The one good thing about being ill

After a short stay in hospital (thank you gallstones) and being off work and housebound for a week I have discovered something I should have seen long ago. The Channel Four drama Mo charting the life of the politician Mo Mowlam and her battle with a brain tumor is without a doubt one of the best dramatisations I have seen since Gerard McSorley’s portrayal of Michael Gallagher in Omagh.

If you haven’t yet watched it, this is one not to miss. Julie Walters gives an unflinchingly honest portrayal of the first Minister of Northern Ireland who was the driving force behind one of the most historic moments in the bloody history of the province. I remember being nine years old and watching the news footage from Stormont, even at that age I was aware that something had happened that was going to have a big impact on my future.  A definite one to watch.
