Ash’s Music Picks – Chop Suey

Posted by in Music Comment on this

Okay, so I’m fairly certain there is a blog post on its way about correlation in between me having work due, and frequency of my posts on HB…

Basically this is being posted for 3 reasons

  1. I’m procrastinating
  2. I’m going to Rock-Am-Ring next week (and SoaD are playing)
  3. Who doesn’t like StopMotion lego video’s?

So, this is somebody’s StopMotion lego version of the original video for ChopSuey – by System of a Down.

GameWatch: The Sabateur

Posted by in Geekery Comment on this

Okay, so this is a game i completed a while ago, and never got around to writing my review on, be it laziness, forgetfulness, or a busy schedule to maintain, but what’s important is that it’s here now :)

We’re gonna be dropped into France, dressed as civilians. And once we’re in enemy territory, as a bushwhackin’ guerrilla army, we’re gonna be doin’ one thing and one thing only… killin’ Nazis.
Lt. Aldo Raine – Inglorious Basterds

Okay, so the quote may not be entirely accurate, however, it’s not exactly far off.  The game is set in 1940 (plus several flashback moments) around Sean Devlin (your first person character, and the story’s protagonist), and the outbreak of the second world war.

The Saboteur

You play a character (Sean) who has left Ireland because of troubles, implied to have been related to ireputable gentlemen, and the story doesn’t give too much else away.  You are found drinking in a bar one night by a Gentleman (Luc) that goes to start the formation of a Parisian resistance.

It’s a truly novel idea for a game, something that hadn’t been attempted before, or at least not to be the basis of a game.  It see’s you running round a fairly true representation of Northern France, and even ducking the border into Germany occasionally, defending civilians, rescuing French resistance, destroying Nazi installations, and restoring France to it’s once former glory.  Something it excelled at, when you liberate an area of France the previously monochrome environment returns to life and colour.  An effect it won Inside Gaming – Best Art Award 2009, in quite a tough category, also containing;

  • Muramasa: The Demon Blade
  • Batman: Arkham Asylum
  • Assassin’s Creed 2
  • Borderlands.

This is one game i thoroughly enjoyed playing through till completion achieving the full 1000 Gamer Score xD

It included, fast cars, races, guns, explosives, fist fights, black ops like stealth, disguises, a burlesque club, and a few hundred thousand Nazi’s, oh and did i mention with an expansion pack (which came a standard with my copy of the game) called the midnight show, which uncensored all of the female scantily clad dancers.

It isn’t for everybody however, and there have been a great many people give up on the game, consider this for a second, there are 1300 free play targets that you need to destroy… Long.

Lasers?

Posted by in Geekery, Rants 1 comment

Okay, so this is kind of exciting…

USB 3.0  - 5Gb/s
Thunderbolt – 10 Gb/s
Domestic TeleCom’s Optcal Fiber – ~14Tb/s

obviously all dependant on distance.

However the latest discovery, and current front page news on BBC’s News portal

Researchers have set a new record for the rate of data transfer using a single laser: 26 terabits per second.

This is pretty cool, imagine data streaming rates that fast?  If the UK is to keep up with the rest of the developed world availability of high speed internet is something the government really need to be looking into, there are places in the UK where broadband is still unavaiable (5% of the country as of the Ofcom survery in 2005, but that page lists the limited avaiability of other services, such as DAB, and DTT too.)

<rant>

The average UK internet speed is 2.95 Mb/s according to Broadband-Expert.

Look at internet speeds around the world, on this handy infographic.
Why is it countries like Japan and Korea can reach average speeds of 61, and 46 Mb/s respectively?

Why is this when such a greater wealth of technology is available, admittedly it comes at a cost, but is it not worth it to have a high speed infrastructure?

More information here.

</rant>

Okay rant over, and some of this information is pretty cool, I look forward to the day when this sort of technology is readily available :)

Tom’s Music Picks – Save The World

Swedish House Mafia

House music trio Swedish House Mafia seem to have a habit of making great, catchy summer tracks.  Save the World follows in that vein, and is out now.

The bottom of my mug reads, “I’m a twat”…

…but at least I have a degree of honesty about it, so I have no qualms catching my reflection of a morning.

When I leave Bangor, my first status is likely to read “Congratulations! If you can still read this, you have survived the first wave of my social networking cull. I either genuinely like you or don’t dislike you enough to get rid of you in round one.”

To be honest, I’ve already started on Twitter as that is my little place. Mine. I live there with the friends I love and the celebrities to whom I am simply another faceless admirer. A key exception to this is probably Sarah Palin.

It will be nice to be able to fully social network in a personal capacity again and not be followed by people seeking to scrutinise everything I say or hashtag. As a general guideline, people in glass houses should not throw stones. Be careful what statuses you like because it could open up a whole world of pain.

My time in Bangor had been interesting and a time of great self-discovery (would you believe I’ve found that I’m not very diplomatic?). I’ve met some best friends for life, the love of my life and some massive numpties. It’s sad that the latter are now in the majority as the people I love scatter.

I am proud of the fact that if I’m coming for you, you will know about it and it will be because I massively and fundamentally disagree with you.

It’s better to be publicly angry than privately resentful. If you resent, you can’t heal.

I may be a twat, but I’m not a racist, a homophobe or a misogynist.

Tom’s Music Picks – Might Light You Better

Today my music pick is a mash-up from US based Mitch-Mash; combining Avicii, Ludacris, Amanda Blank, Ellie Goulding, Kelis and Wiz Khalifa. A great track, and if you like what you hear, there’s more mashed up goodness on his Soundcloud.

GameWatch: Modern Warfare 3 Teasers

Modern Warfare 3

The last week or so has seen details trickling (or leaking) onto the internet about Modern Warfare 3, the latest installment in the Call of Duty franchise.

It now looks like we can expect the first full trailer for the highly anticipated game in the next few days, with Activision confirming via the game Facebook page that this will premiere on the 23rd May on ESPN.

Exciting times, especially based on the series of teasers that can be found on YouTube.

How to make a news bulletin

Posted by in Geekery Comment on this

A lot of us on Hooded Badger have spent time in student radio during the last few years.  My time included working on a news show called 7 Into 30, assembling news stories from the week into a 30 minute show.  With that in mind, I’ve just been passed this clip via Facebook, and I can’t help but chuckle insanely to myself, despite it being 3:37 in the morning when I frankly should be in bed.  Let the radio related geekery commence.

Ash’s Music Picks – Fight For Your Right Revisited

Posted by in Music Comment on this

Something Old, something New, and something Borrowed. (Technically)

So i guess the borrowed bit isn’t strictly correct, but it is several actors ‘borrowing’ a Beastie Boys song…

As part of a film looking back at the influence of the Beastie Boys
It tells the wholly imagined story of what happened after 1987′s legendary “Fight, for your right (to Party!)”

It features cameo’s from a huge number of well known actors;
Danny McBride, Seth Rogen Elijah Wood, Will Ferrell, Jack Black, Kirstin Dunst etc…

Several even playing the role originally portrayed by the Beastie Boys, kind of retrospectively coming downstairs the day after the party, and reliving the events of the night before, so without further adieu…

And if you’d like to see the original, you can here:

Blasts from the past!

So I haven’t posted in a long time. A hell of a long time. I’m sorry. No excuses.

So I thought I’d come back with a bit of music, two of my all-time favourites. They’re quite different I grant, but both superb. Give them a listen and tell me I’m wrong.

I’ll put up some more actual postings in the near future I promise. But for now, this will settle me back into it nicely. Enjoy.

Everything But The Girl – Missing

and the frankly gorgeous live version of Never Tear Us Apart by INXS. Beautiful. This track is simply wonderful. Please give it a listen and feel the hairs on your arms stand.
