Goings on

It’s time for a strange and interesting news round-up from the web:

Hamsters in Jackets Create Electricity

German Village Turns Off Street Lights (but turn them back on with their mobile phones)

And finally…

Kit Kat Unveils Human Vending Machines In London

There you go.  Have a nice day!

6th Day

Posted by in Geekery, Ramblings Comment on this

Looking through today’s news, among all the death, destruction and environmental prophecies was a rather interesting yet strangely familiar story.  Turns out scientists in South Korea have successfully cloned a pet dog (5 times), an event that instantly reminded me of The 6th Day.  Just in case you missed it on TV or at the cinema, the film includes a service called RePet, a service to clone an exact replacement for your dead pet.

The moral implications haven’t really been left alone since Dolly was cloned back in the 90′s.  Should we be cloning animals, or perhaps even humans?  How far is it until we are able to clone our loved ones?

I’m generally quite open to new science and ideas, I don’t subscribe to the view that it isn’t ‘God’s way’ or that it’s not natural.  I do however propose a question; if you could, would you want to?

How very odd

Nothing like a bit of comfort food and beer after a particularly long and stressful day at work.  Unlike the others, my music listening opportunities are slightly limited with the amount of time I spend on the phone. Of course a long stressful day often involves the customary escape to the BBC News site as soon as lunch time hits.

Of note today; scientists appear to have found what looks like a very old, mouldy baked potato, a porn channel has been fined for showing adult content, and someone who looks scarily like a certain Students Union president has tried to glue himself to Gordon Brown.

Anyway, I’m really quite tired, so I leave you with the video for The Verve’s new single ‘Love is Noise.’

Isn't the news pleasant!

Posted by in Ramblings Comment on this

It must be said, I’m a bit of an avid news fan. However, it’s not very often that most of what you hear on the news is good! So today came as quite a pleasant surprise.

Who would have thought that in a single day:

1. Radovan Karadzic would be found and arrested [incidentally why would a tyrannical dictator responsible, allegedly, for the slaughter of thousands of people, choose to work in an alternative medicine centre?].

2. Mugabe and Tsvangirai holding talks (admittedly with some help from Mbeke) about power-sharing.

3. Petrol prices would decrease! Hurrah! Shame it’s only by 4p or so, but hey, I paid £1.25 on Sunday…

Rather a good day all in all!

However, that said, work was dire. Truly soul-destroying. I hate it at the moment, the people I work with are top but I didn’t slave away for three years to grind 20 year old paint off a metal train. That said, it does give me chance to listen to the radio and learn stuff. I choose Radio 4, I like it anyway. So, today’s fact I learned whilst listening: A fly, like most insects, has a de-centralised nervous system, unlike humans where it is obviously the brain. This means that an insect, even if you were to remove the head, could still function on a basic level – it’s wings would still flap and it’s legs would still move for example.

One final thought to you leave you with is this, again I heard it on the radio but it made me think:

Why do numbers always have the final word?
